| A view of the town of Royston as seen looking westwards from Hyde Hill at 0925 GMT on 10th November 2000. Just beyond the town boundary (left side of picture) can be seen the Newmarket Road playing field, whilst in the distance Therfield Heath stands out prominently. The far horizon to the right is in the vicinity of Ashwell, some 7 km distant. It is a sunny morning with the temperature registering 5.9°C, after an overnight minimum of 5.2°C. The wind is WSW, mean speed 5 knots, gusting to 14 knots. The sunshine duration for the day was 5.5 hours, and a maximum temperature of 10.8°C was achieved. | This photograph was taken at approximately the same time (0927 GMT on 10th November 2000) as the adjacent picture and shows the Royston A505 east-west by-pass as it negotoiates the deep chalk cutting in Hyde Hill. This view is looking north- westwards showing the road leaving Hyde Hill and heading out onto the South Cambridgeshire Plain. This is a major route between the South Midlands and East Anglia , the by-pass having been built in 1981 to relieve congestion which particularly affected eastbound traffic at the weekends and holiday times. | This is the barograph in use at Royston (Iceni) Weather Station for recording air pressure. A pen moving up and down with the changes in pressure records a continuous trace on the chart which is wrapped around the revolving clockwork drum (this being set for weekly rotation). The stack of evacuated capsules to the right of the clock drum detects pressure changes, which are then transmitted to the pen arm via a series of levers and pivots. This instrument was made by Negretti & Zambra in 1968 and has performed faultlessly ever since! ( Note:- The barograms displayed on this site are derived from the automatic equipment, and not this instrument, however). |
