A reminder of the recent harvest in the Royston area, this striking display of gourds & pumpkins etc. was seen on 18th October 2004 in the Waterlily House at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew (some 67 km SSW of Royston). The display is mounted above the pond containing the giant water lilies which themselves form an equally resplendent feature through the Summer. The Royal Botanical Gardens maintains its own  weather station a short distance from this site where the instrumentation can be inspected at close hand. On 10th August 2003 the weather station here recorded one of the United Kingdom's highest ever temperatures (38.1°C), whilst at Royston (Iceni) Weather Station the maximum temperature that day was a record (since 1972) 36.4C.	This picture shows a southwards looking view along the Hertfordshire Way to the south of Royston from a point close to Flint Hall Farm and heading towards the Grange. The date is 21st October and the time 1539 GMT. To the left of the picture in the middle distance is Halfmoon Plantation whilst in the far distance are the East Anglian Heights. It looks a tranquil enough scene in the late afternoon sunshine but, in fact, a strong southerly wind of mean speed 12 knots gusting to 32 knots is blowing across the Heights towards Royston. A deep low passing close to the Orkney Isles with a steep pressure gradient on its southern flank has resulted in a very windy day (and preceding night) with a maximum wind gust speed of 46 knots being recorded in Royston at 0155 GMT.	This photograph was taken from close to Royston shortly after a relatively colourless sunrise on 28th October 2004 (at 0750 GMT). Despite an active low pressure system just to the south of Ireland giving wet and stormy conditions over the south-west peninsula, and projecting bands of rain over the country, it is relatively calm in the Royston area with a southerly wind of mean speed 2 knots, gusting to 10 knots, being recorded at the time. The weather of the ensuing day was surprisingly pleasant in Royston with plenty of warm sunshine (total 6.7 hours) and a maximum temperature of 15.7°C (3.3°C above the 30 Year average for this day). It remained dry in Royston during daylight hours but a band of rain crossed the area in the evening.
