Although Autumn is fairly well advanced there is still plenty of colour in the University Botanic Garden, Cambridge (21 km NE of Royston) at the time of this picture (10th November 2004, at 1233 GMT). This is the scene at the western arm of The Lake, which was created around an old gravel pit in the field which became the Botanic Garden in 1846. The tree (actually growing in the water) visible in the centre of the picture is Taxodium distichum, a swamp cypress native to the oxygen poor swamps in south-eastern United States and Mexico. It is a deciduous conifer, its feathery foliage turning a beautiful colour before being shed. After a mainly sunny morning cloud rapidly increased after about noon GMT; sunshine for the day at Royston was 4.3 hours.	A wet day was experienced in Royston on 18th November 2004 and unexpectedly in the evening the rain suddenly turned to snow, giving a 4 cm level cover as measured at 0900 GMT the next day. Total rainfall and rainfall equivalent of snow was 28.3 millimetres on 18th. In this view 2 km E of Royston on 19th November 2004 (at 0923 GMT) the autumn sown cereal crop is well covered by the snow which is starting to thaw in the bright early morning sunshine, even though the temperature is still slightly below 0°C). The temperature achieved a maximum of 4.4°C after an overnight minimum of -0.9°C. By a narrow margin this was the earliest (relatively) substantial Autumn snowfall in Royston in the last 30 years (1993, 1988 and 1985 having similar occurrences).	After 3 dull days with less than 2 minutes sunshine recorded over the entire period, these horses in their winter apparel at Burloes Farm, Royston are enjoying the morning sunshine on 26th November 2004 (as seen at 0951 GMT). This sunshine did not last, however, and only 2.1 hours sunshine was recorded that day. Although November had been rather dull over the country as a whole up to this date, sunshine in Royston was still slightly above average. This grassland is an oasis in the mostly arable farmland of the area (as per the preceding picture, the location of which is close by). The wind direction is SW, and the wind is of strength 3 knots gusting to 12 knots. The temperature is 9.5°C, later rising to an above average (by 4.2°C) 12.2°C.
