4472 Flying Scotsman

Again, not strictly a weather item, but a second picture relating to the railway  reference in the feature about the effects in Royston of the Mount Pinatubo eruption. Here, the world famous locomotive 4472 Flying Scotsman races through Royston station in bright Autumn sunshine at 1025 GMT on 17th October 1999 on its journey from London (Kings Cross) to Norwich. The temperature is 11.8°C, with a north-easterly wind (head wind for the outward journey!) of mean speed 2 knots, gusting to 12 knots. Royston enjoyed 9.5 hours sunshine that day and a maximum temperature of 14.3°C. The Flying Scotsman holds the world record for the longest continuous journey by a steam locomotive, having achieved a non-stop distance of 422 miles across Australia in 1989.
