This wheat crop to the north of the B1039 road mid-way between Royston and Barley has been enhanced in appearance by a poppy border on its eastern side (as seen on 1st July 2012 at 0727 GMT). After enduring mostly dry conditions in the first half of Spring, the heavy rains since mid-April have given the crop a welcome boost and the ears appear to have filled out well. Rainfall from April to June totalled 303.2 millimetres, approximately half of the 30 Year (1981/2010) average for the whole year! By 20th July a further 127.3 millimetres rainfall had been recorded, and this has made the April/July period in Royston easily the wettest such period since at least 1853 when the Royston rainfall record commenced. The next wettest April/July was in 1903 when 397.0 millimetres rainfall was recorded. At the time this photograph was taken the mean wind speed was 10 knots gusting to 17 knots in a temperature of 13.4°C. The maximum temperature that day was 3.0°C below average at 18.5°C, even though it was fairly sunny with 9.9 hours sunshine for the day. A weak ridge of high pressure crossed the region on 1st ahead of advancing Atlantic fronts. It is some years since the beautiful gothic mansion Knebworth House (23 km SW of Royston, pictured above at 1031 GMT on 12th July 2012) last featured in these pages, and in the meantime the Dinosaur trail has been introduced, in addition to the existing maze, the organically run walled kitchen garden, the Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden, and the magnificent gardens some of which are featured in this view. On the Dinosaur trail 72 life-sized dinosaurs can be found grazing amongst the rhododendrons and redwoods and provide a fascinating insight into the lives of these creatures for both children and adults alike. Despite being in a very wet period (see adjacent caption) the Knebworth gardeners have been able to maintain the lawns and gardens in their usual excellent condition.  There have been gardens at Knebworth House since at least the 17th Century but the present layout dates largely from the Edwardian era. On a completely different note Knebworth House is of course famous worldwide for its rock concerts, and as the home of Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton (author of the words 'The pen is mightier than the sword'). On 15th July 2012 a party from the Royston Allotment and Gardens Association visited the National Trust property Clumber Park, Worksop, Nottinghamshire (155 km NNW of Royston). Clumber Park is a beautiful expanse of parkland, heath, woods and lake covering more than 3800 acres. Formerly the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle, Clumber Park is unusual in that it has no stately home, this having been demolished in 1938. However, it does have the imposing Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin, known as a 'cathedral in miniature' and a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture, pictured above. The highlight of the visit for this group of gardeners was undoubtedly the guided tour of the Walled Kitchen Garden in the company of the Head Gardener and deputy. This 4 acre Garden, which has a 'wall within a wall', is in the process of being restored by the National Trust to its former glory. Despite rainfall having occurred on every day in July up to 15th (at Royston), and sunshine running at only 60% of average for this period, luckily the 15th itself was a dry day with sunny periods (8.4 hours sunshine at Royston), albeit rather cool for July.
