Construction of the railway underpass at Coombes Hole, Royston (as featured in these pages several times in recent months) linking the NE and NW segments of the town was completed in May 2012 after about 14 months of earth and building works. The metallic statues then installed at the eastern end of Coombes Hole as shown in this photograph celebrate famous ancient and modern people with close connections to Royston. These are Alison Balsom, trumpeter, who spent her childhood in the town, King James VI of Scotland who became King James I of England, and the Town Crier. Alison Balsom, Female Artist of the Year in the Classic BRIT Awards 2011, has gained international recognition for her flawless technique with nuanced interpretations, often of music arranged for trumpet by herself. When King James VI of Scotland travelled south in 1603 to take over the English Crown on the union of the Crowns of Scotland and England he stopped off at Royston, and so liked the town he set up a Court here and visited periodically for mainly recreational purposes. Situated at the foot of the East Anglian Heights on chalk strata and near to the southern boundary of the Great Ouse catchment area the town of Royston has no surface drainage and hence no rivers or streams flowing in the immediate area. However, a number of neighbouring towns to the north, notably those on the Great Ouse itself, make up for this lack of surface water but can suffer from flooding in exceptionally wet periods. In this picture the Great Ouse at St. Neots (27 km NW of Royston), as seen at 0858 GMT on 13th September 2012, is featured, looking upstream from the B1428 St. Neots Road bridge leading to the High Street. This was a cold clear morning, the minimum temperature at Royston being 5.7°C but later rising to a maximum of 18.2°C, which is 0.9°C below the 30 Year (1981/2010) average, whilst sunshine at Royston was 9.5 hours. September at Royston had been very dry up to this point with only 0.1 millimetre rainfall in the first 11 days, but the Great Ouse is not showing any water deficiency, no doubt still well filled by the very wet April/July period. The old Priory cinema site opposite the Town Hall in Royston has for several years been bounded by a large blue fence which has become a familiar feature in the town. Earlier this year this fence was adorned by artwork produced by the pupils of Roysia Middle School and the Meridian School for 'Royston's Year of Celebration in 2012'. This picture shows but part of the attractive feature which faces the Newmarket Road, whilst just round the corner are two more impressive large artworks. The original cinema at a nearby location was destroyed by fire on 12th June 1933, but was rebuilt on this new site and re-opened on 27th November 1933 with Diana Wynyard in the film 'Cavalcade'. The cinema then continued in operation until 28th September 2000 when it was closed. A public campaign failed to save it and it was demolished in August 2002. Also on the site within the current boarding was the Green Plunge outdoor swimming pool and a restaurant. The Green Plunge also closed several years ago, with swimming facilities now being available at the Royston Leisure Centre.
