April 2013 Weather Review

(All differences from average quoted in this report relate to the 30 Year period 1981/2010)

Overall, April was a cold and dry but sunny month in Royston.

The unseasonably cold weather in March continued almost to mid-April and it was only on 13th that the daily maximum temperature reached its 30 Year mean for the first time since 6th March.

On 4th the day maximum temperature reached only 3.8°C, this being the lowest such value in April since 5th April 1989 and the second lowest such value in April since records began (1972). The cold start to the month contributed to it being the coldest April since 1989, and it also continued the trend of each month so far in 2013 being colder than average.

The second half of the month was much warmer resulting in the mean daily maximum temperature of 13.3°C for the month as a whole being only 0.4°C below average, The mean night minimum temperature did not recover as much and was 1.3°C below average at 3.5°C. The mean earth temperature at 30 cms depth as recorded at 0900 GMT daily was 7.8°C, which is 2.3°C below average, a figure undoubtedly influenced by the very cold March causing low values at the start of the month.
